FOOT PROTECTION
FIRST AID: SIMPLE TO ADVANCED
If you have a wound under your foot, or the side of your foot, or anywhere on the toes, you may need protection other than just normal shoes. The wounds may be due to blisters, cuts, pressure, diabetes and can take a while to heal.
Hikers need good boots to mitigate pressure rubs.
Can you stay off your foot for a week or 3 or 12? Most people will say not for 3 weeks let alone 12.
A diabetic may say it’s not painful, so nothing to see here. A main driver of a diabetic wound is pressure and forgetting the wound is there as it does not hurt.
If wounds are not offloaded, they will be slow to heal and the longer they stay open, the higher risk of infection.
People develop bunions which rub and require continual band-aids or a silicone cover can be utilised. Soft uppers that stretch are also good. But remember soft = comfortable but will not lat as long.
People also have swollen feet and legs and may go up and down during the day. A lot of people wear compression garments but get sick of them and then leg and foot swells. Below are shoes that can help. Some people may need wider shoes for afternoon wear.
Hikers also need good boots and socks to mitigate pressure rubs.

COMFORTABLE SHOES
Comfortable shoes reduce blisters, often they come in extra width and depth and cushioning insoles. Depth is important with those who have claw toes, width for wide feet, bunions and swelling.
Diabetic shoes reduce blisters by making the uppers seamless, and have insoles that can be altered or replaced.

TEMPORARY SHOES
These darcos are designed for feet after surgery in thick dressing . The sole is stiff to stop bending and acts like a splint. It has a forefoot rocker to help with toe off.
Not for very unbalanced people, but most people can walk in them. They are light, comfortable great for swollen feet and can add pads to the base to offload ulcers. They last a few months but people wear them to pieces, dirty them in the garden, and want to buy more.
Camwalkers are also available, and better for forefoot ulcers, burns, post blisters. They do not offload plantar heel ulcers well and can rub heel ulcers on the sides . A dacro is better for heel ulcers.
If a person finds a long leg camwalker too hard to wear or leg is too wide, a short leg camwalker may fit.
An evenup attaches to good foots shoe to level up walking .
Crutches, walkers, knee walker are used for added offloading and balance
Knee walkers come for different weights. If you have balance issues don’t buy. These can be a falls risk.
JOGGERS
Joggers are good for wounds with dressings,as long as not too bulky, as some can be washed, have space, can replace with custom insoles, and come in different widths.
Elastic laces are helpful as they stretch as foot swells.Joggers that fit and bought for the sport they are designed for, is the best.
Sandals
There is a sandal for everyone. Some people hate shoes but need something. They shouldn’t be used for diabetics or poor blood flow, as if the person knocks their toe or drops a knife on it, a new wound occurs and then does not heal. Sandals with enclosed heels reduce heel cracking and new wounds. A good cream daily, is also essential to prevent heel cracks, pressure injuries, and in sport.
Sandals with enclosed heels can be hard to find.
