NUTRITION OVERVIEW

Nutrition is important for wound healing in those that have medical conditions e.g. diabetes, kidney disease, poor blood flow, cancers, malabsorption, major surgery that lower the immune system. 

Age, poor nutrition even in the obese person, lower income, gut dysfunction, smoking, stress, poor food choices, lack of food all eventually can impact  health.

Vitamins for wound healing such as Zinc ( read more),  Vitamin , C, D, E and protein are very important to consider if the wound is slow healing, as is treating the underlying cause. Vitamins for immunity for seniors is beneficial if they have poor eating habits.

Some good food sources include: citrus fruits (grapefruit, oranges, tangerines), strawberries, cantaloupe, kiwi fruit, African horned cucumber, moringa leaves, papaya, mango, bell peppers, red peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A also important for wound healing. Food sources include fortified milk, cheese and margarine, eggs, spinach, dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, apricots, cantaloupe, squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin.

Protein

Protein is required and can be lost through excessive oozing from leg ulcers and burns. Eat foods that are high in protein such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, beans, tofu, and peanut butter.
